This webquest is intended to be part of the culminating project of a Pre-Algebra unit on Probability. Throughout the unit, students learned about topics such as: basic probability, experimental probability, theoretical probability, mutually exclusive events, the Fundamental Counting Principle, permutations, and combinations.

Throughout the unit, students learned a bit about the history of games of chance, gambling, and casinos.  Students also learned a bit about gaming from other cultures, in addition to analyzing games of chance by calculating the odds of winning. They communicated with one another about what they learned on the class forum, located at  http://ltms.forummotion.com/.

For this webquest, students must read about the history of one particular casino in Germany -- Casino Baden Baden – in addition to the history of gambling in Las Vegas, Nevada. Baden Baden is one of the oldest casinos in Europe, and Las Vegas, of course, has defined much of America’s gambling history.

Students must also read a bit about the history of playing cards, with a focus on China and Europe, in addition to the history of marbles, with a focus on how children across the world use them.

For the final part of this webquest, students must analyze one game of chance: Craps.

After the completion of this webquest, students will create a project for a grade-wide event called “Casino Loyale.” They will create their own games of chance, defining rules, norms, gameboards, and other attractive visuals for their table. Students will analyze the odds of winning the game that they created, and they will describe the game in a PowerPoint presentation (for Language Arts class). The final game will be played by all eighth graders at the “Casino Loyale” event.

Please see the list of deadlines for the game project.

Please note that all meeting deadlines will count as a homework grade and towards the project.
